The Scouts of Troop 98’s Patrol Leaders’ Council, in consultation with other Scouts holding positions of responsibility, have discussed, voted on, and approved an updated electronic device policy for all Troop 98 meetings, outings, and campouts.
This policy was developed through a thoughtful and collaborative discussion among Scouts about the benefits and challenges of electronic device use. The consensus: when Troop 98 Scouts are at a meeting, on an outing, or at a campout, they should be fully present and engaged—not distracted by devices.
This policy applies to all personal electronic devices capable of making a data or internet connection. This includes, but is not limited to:
Smartphones
Smartwatches
Tablets
Laptops
Devices may not be used during weekly troop meetings.
All devices should be powered off and put away at the start of the meeting.
If a device is seen being used, it will be collected by an adult leader and returned to the Scout or their parent at the end of the meeting.
Scouts may use their devices during travel to the outing or campout.
Upon arrival, before leaving the vehicle, all devices will be collected by an adult leader, powered off, and securely stored.
If a Scout needs to use their device during the outing or campout, they may do so under the supervision of an adult leader. Afterward, the device will be powered down and re-secured.
Devices will be returned to Scouts for use during the return trip home.
To stay on schedule without a device, we recommend Scouts use a traditional wristwatch. We recommend a waterproof or water-resistant digital watch with time, date, alarm, and stopwatch functions, these can be found for around $10–$20.
