Basic to the lessons in Scouting, especially regarding citizenship, service projects are a key part of the Troop 98 Scouting program. A service project is a special Good Turn that puts Scout spirit into action, and you can see Troop 98 scouts across our neighborhood doing service.
If you would like Troop 98 scouts to participate in a service project to benefit our community, please email the Troop 98 Scoutmaster or Service Project Coordinator.
Approval: Scouts must obtain approval for community service projects from the Scoutmaster BEFORE beginning any work; service projects organized/promoted by Troop 98 are pre-approved.
Document: Download, print and complete the Scouts BSA Troop 98 Service Project Approval Form (PDF)
Report: For ALL service projects, the person verifying the hours completed cannot be a Scout’s parent and must be an adult representative (21 years or older) of the organization you performed the service for or a Troop 98 adult leader.
Record: Once service is completed, return the completed and signed to the Troop 98 Scoutmaster or Service Project Coordinator for final approval and recording.
Per the Scouting America Guide to Advancement, service projects required for ranks other than Eagle must be approved according to what is written in the requirements and may be conducted individually or through participation in patrol or troop efforts. Service project work for ranks other than Eagle clearly calls for participation only. Planning, development, or leadership must not be required. Time that Scouts spend assisting on Eagle service projects must be allowed in meeting these requirements. Note that Eagle projects do not have a minimum time requirement, but call for planning and development, and leadership of others, and must be preapproved by the council or district. (See “The Eagle Scout Service Project,” 9.0.2.0.)
The National Safe Scouting Support Committee has issued two documents that work together to assist youth and adult leaders in planning and safely conducting service projects: SAFE Service Project Planning Checklist, and its companion, SAFE Project Tool Use. Unit leadership should be familiar with both documents.
